Service As A Lifestyle: Allegheny College Students Team Up With The Belle Center To Serve
This week 16 students from Allegheny College traveled thousands of miles from as far away as California for 3 days of high impact volunteer service in the Buffalo community with The Belle Center. Their volunteer service is also helping prepare for the crescendo to the MLK Day of Service 2011: A Breath of Hope.
Buffalo residents are seeing and experiencing the extra assistance as students working with Buffalo AmeriCorps members are springing into action to respond to the Mayor’s 311 snow removal requests. Buffalo AmeriCorps members and Allegheny students are also freshening up areas at The Belle Center and Vive La Casa with new paint.
Allegheny student Katie Beck (freshman, English/Theater major) stated: “I’ve found that Buffalo is the perfect place to understand the meaning of community service. As we confront the mounds of snow to shovel, it seems like an impossible task. But the more hands there are to help, the quicker our improbable goal becomes a tangible solution. Snow may never cease, but neither will the hands willing to help.” We thank the students from Alleghany College for taking the time to come and help serve the Buffalo community.
