MLK Day of Service 2011: A Breath of Hope!
Buffalo, New York – January 10, 2011 –30 Buffalo AmeriCorps members will kick-off their Martin Luther King Day of Service by being sworn in by Mayor Byron Brown in front of City Hall. This event will take place Friday, January 14, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. outside in front of City Hall inside of the circle.

Buffalo AmeriCorps members and volunteers will form groups to perform two service projects on Monday, January 17, 2011: the kick-off of our Asthma Screening Program Home Visitations that will take place at two Buffalo family residences 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at 443 Parkdale Avenue Buffalo, NY 14213 & 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. at #98-19th Street Buffalo, NY 14213 and the Buffalo Refugee Shelter Renovation- 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Vive La Casa-50 Wyoming Ave. Buffalo,NY14215.

Buffalo AmeriCorps and The Belle Center have been addressing the high rates of Asthma in the Buffalo community through the Asthma Screening Program that develops Asthma management strategies for children residing in Buffalo’s West Side through education, screening and at home assessments.

The Community Health Worker and Buffalo AmeriCorps members will provide the households that have been identified as having asthma triggers with food containers, air purifier, hypoallergenic pillows, a bed covering sheet, education material and ongoing support from the Community Health Worker. At Vive La Casa fresh paint, furniture and other necessities will be provided to improve the interior environment for the hundreds of asylum seekers who receive services there every year.
